DISTRICT NEWS.

CARDIFF. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The need of a hall at Cardiff was emphasised at the last patriotic social, in honor of 'Private Norman Stewart, who was at home on final leave. The schoolroom, which has done good service in the past, can hardly supply standing room for the patrons at the popular Cardiff socials, so dancing is almost impossible. Years ago ways and means of providing a hall for the district were discussed, and finally abandoned, and at present, owing to patriotic exigencies, the want is likely to remain. Mr. Seiyel, agricultural instructor, gave a practical demonstration to a few of the local farmers on Mr. Bounton's place last Wednesday. The present season is a very busy one for Mr. Farmer to leave his work in order to attend lectures during the precious hours of daylight. and a much better attendance would be accorded evening lectures. The Cardiff School Committee, at their meetinsf. decided to hold a working be», in order to put the school grounds in order. On 'Monday morning, in response to an appeal from the several local residents voluntarilv assisted them in their endeavors. Owing to delay in procuring material, the work was attempted at a busy time, consequently some of the residents found it impossible to be present. Nevertheless, it is highly creditable to the committee and the others who a=sisted to have carried out the work. The working bee, under the management of Mr. J. W. Rogers (chairman!, snon began operations, and almost completed Ihe work in hand. The remainder will be finished next week. The Cardiff ladies are hard at work preparing Christmas parcels for the boys at the front, as well as knitting comforts for their use during the coining European winter. At present the factory is not in full swintr.'as the suppliers are not yet milking full herds. Besides this, the weather is delaying growth in the pastures, and bavin? an adverse effect on the earlv calvers.
