PROTESTS AGAINST ANOMALIES. The following resolution was passed at a meeting of the Eltham branch of the Farmers' Union on Saturday: "That this branch, whilst recognising that the Hon. the Minister of Finance has to be supported in the raising of money for war and other purposes, and expresses its willingness to assist by contributing fairly, desires to protest against the anomalies in the proposed incidence of taxation under the Finance Bill as being particularly unfair to small fanners." Minister of Finance that the gross amount to be rained by taxation cannot be reduced, feels that'the provision in the Finance Bill whereby a man is taxed on the mortgage on his farm will be particularly hard on small farmers who are financially weak, and suggests that if some relief could be afforded them the revenue thus lost could be made up by increased taxation on well-to-do farmers, on mortaagees and luxuries."—Star.
