A JURYS UNANIMITY.
CHIEF JUSTICE'S OBSERVATION ' DISCUSSED. (From 'Our Parliamentary 'Reporter). Wellington, Sept. 5. When the Legislative Council met today the Hon. 0. Samuel, who strongly opposes proposals for the. amendmert- of the Juries Act, drew attention to the fact that the Chief Justice, after the disagreement of a jury at Napier, had said that the requirement of unanimity of the jury in criminal cases was a farce. Mr. Samuel wanted to know if the Government did not consider that this reflection from the bench upon the lai\v of the land, and upon a practice accepted by British communities throughout the world, was likely to impair public confidence in the administration of justice. ■He gave notice of a. question on the subject. Mr. 'Samuel gave notice of a further question regarding tho attitude of Ministers towards the Juries Act Amendment Bill, which proposes to allow the verdict of five-sixths of the members of a jury to be accepted. This Bill has now been shelved for the present session. Wood's Great- Peppermint Cure. 1/0, 2/0 for Chronic Chest Complaints,
