TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Taranaki horses played an important part in the settlement of the principal fiat handicap at ilarton, Crawford boing prominent, with Flying Camp ai.d I.adv Louisa all the way, while llaniaroa and Iceberg joined in in the straight. It wsis a rattling good finish, but Iceberg was the best conditioned of the lot, and won very nicely from Lady Louisa, who just headed Crawford and Maniaroa. TV ' winner was ridden a very confident raw, and his party threw in for a good win. Orleans, a reputed mudlark, was made first favorite, but was never prominent. i Coldstream's showing was also very disappointing. Elocution won the Railway Handicap absolutely upon her merits, and thovgh she bad not much to show over Cer.tr-> at the finish, she would have been very unlucky bad she lost. The Demosthenes filly was not fortunate at the start, but once she got under way =he simply flew. Coldfire show r ed some dash in the early ! stages, but was well beaten a long way i from home. The decrepit Aucklande* has a joint on-one leg nearly as big as | jxiur head. •'.Master Stroll In" once again proved what a good horse he is by winning the principal steeples in clever fashion. ' Postillion led a strung-out field passing the stand, but at six furlongs Colorado " headed the black, and Calais (who was voted a moral by Waverley "sports") also became prominent. Calais was'done before reaching the home turn, where n Mattock and Swinton, who had been lying handy, joined in The trio struggled 6 on to the" finish, all being "dead licked" in '. the heavy going, and Mattock, Colorado • and Swinton crossed the line lengths ' apart. Combustion was fourth. '■ The Trial Plate looked like providing ■ a duel between Mr. W. Duncan's pair, 6 Coolpan and Rude, and the bracketed neddies were well clear as they came 6 into the straight, Signorella, however, .' finished verv fast, splitting the pair. - Rude finished strongly, and scored by a " length On the tracks Coolpan is al- '. leged to be the better of the pair, but • Rude is easily the "crack" under silk. ,". iPiano got badiy away, and had a wretchie ed run throughout.
