Y.M.C.A.
ITS WORK DESCRIBED. The splendid work that has been done, and is still being carried on with unabated oY.crgy, at the front by the Y.M.C.A. was described at two meetings yesterday, by Mr. A. Varney. New Zealand commissioner, who recently arrived in the Dominion direct from the theatre of war. In the afternoon Mr. Varney met mothers, wives and sisters of soldiers in the Good Templar Hall, and gave them some very interesting particulars of the system adopted in caring for the men who are engaged in the conflict, and how, as far as possible, their every need is met, and their hardships alleviated. Those who attended were entertained at afternoon tea by the Ladies" Patriotic League. ' In the evening Mr. Varney delivered a lecture in the Empire Picture Theatre, the audience being large and appreciative. He described in detail the organisation of the Y.M.C.A. at the front and in England, the many ramifications of its excellent \ work, and the gratitude With which it's Ministrations to the sick and wounded were rewarded. With the aid of over '2OO lantern views he depicted many of the dilliculties \vhich have to bo encountered, the means taken to overcome them, and the claims which the Y.M.C.A. has upon the nation as ft whole for the great and humane work voluntarily undertaken and so nobly performed. The views, which were specially taken by Mr. Varney, proved of great interest, and his lecture was a clear and graphic account of what the Y.M.C.A. is attempting and accomplishing in tho cause of humanity.
