OBITUARY.

ME. C. M. LEPPER, The death took place yes.terday morning of Mr. C. M. .Lepper, at his residence in Courtenay street, Mew Plymouth, after a Ion;; and painful illness. The beginning of his breakdown in health dates back (is far as two years ago, when he suffered from a paralytic 11 stroke, which rendered one of his legs and one of his arms practically useless. He eventually resigned hUs position as secretary of the Hospital Board. His fine courage, however, for a time mastered his misfortunes, and he became a member of the .Hospital Bocui, also its chairman. Some three months ago he had a leg fractured, and this was followed by an attack of pleurisy, and from that time till the end he was confined to bed, for a period as an inmate of the hospital, but latterly in his own home. The late Mr. Lepper was 57 years of age. He came to New Zealand as a child with his father, Major I.epper, of the Kth Regiment, who afterwards became Lieutenant-Colonel of the Taranaki Militia. Receiving a military grant of land at Leppcrton, which place. was named after him, he settled upon it, remaining there from the close of the Maori war till his death, when Mr. C. M. Lepper, his eldest son. inherited a portion of the property. Mr. Lepper farmed this land until 1001, when he came to reside in New Plymouth. He always took a keen interest in the affairs of the hospital and the old people's home, even during his protracted and painful illness. He was for a time a member of the Taranaki Comity Council, aIBO in racing circles lie was well known as the chairman of the Taranaki Jockey Club committee and the Metropolitan committee, besides having acted in the capacity of stipendiary steward for tho Stratford Racing Club at several of their meetings.
