ELTHAM.
THE WAR LOAN. (From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, Sept. 3. Those who are ever ready to believe that Eltham is drifting back to the village stage must have received a rude shock when they learned that the war loan certificates totalled £17,000. An enthusiastic business man says this works out at £lO per head for every man, woman and child in the borough. Under the circumstances I may be permitted to say, or write, "Well done, Eltham!" Mention of the successful ironsand operations in New Plymouth in to-day's Daily News reminds one of the other industry—oil. One wonders whether it is spouting oil. Whilst writing I have before me a notice declaring a final dividend of Cd per share on ten shares, so evidently if the oil is not being squeezed out of the ground, 5s is coming forward from the liquidators. Let's hope the ironsand industry will be a profitable and successful one. Like oil, one is assured the iron is there; the difficulty lies in finding the successful application, and: if the Daily News is any criterion —and the News is generally accurate —success seems assured. Something new in the way of patriotic gifts; Mr. Nicholas Muir has donated three £1 war certificates to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Mr. L. 3. Grirastone is treasurer to this fund, and is prepared to accept any number of these donations. Wet weather still keeps one indoors. On Saturday the damp conditions pre. vailing militated somewhat against the success of the patriotic tea rooms which were controlled on that occasion by the Belgian Sewing Guild. Wet weather notwithstanding, the sum of £9 15s was secured.
