It is pleasing to find such keen interest taken here in the work of the Plunket 1 Society, and it was an' excellent idea to hold a "Bah} - Day" in support of the movement. The result of Wednesday's effort was the creditable sum of about £4O, with more to come in, which carries with it a Government subsidy of 24s to the .€ so that .Stratford should 'be ' having the services of a resident Plunket nurse before long. All the ladies worked well, as will be Been from the takings. . The Patriotic Mart, in charge of Mesdames J. VV. Boon and R. Masters, raised £l3 ss, The flower shop, which was run by Mrs. Ashton and others, brought in £0 os and as it will remain open till the end of the week to clear the stock, the receipts should be considerably increased. Mesdames Curtis and Prentis did good business in lollies, etc., their takings amounting to £4, while the refreshment rooms, under the able control of Mesdames Budge and Crawshaw, earned over £lO. In the cake-guessing competition Mrs. Boon and Mrs. Fever tied and divided. The camisole was won by Miss Eva Haskell, the doll by Miss Alma Black, and the table centre 'by Miss Falder. of Beaconsficld Road. The euchre party in the evening was in charge of Mesdames D. J. Malone, F. Uniacke, and W. Robinson. For the gent.'s prize Mr. W. C. Franks tied with Mrs. J. B. Hine, and the former won on the plav-off. The lady's prize fell to Mrs. Jenkins. GENERAL. An enjoyable concert, organised by Mrs. Cuthbert, who presides over the school committee, was held in the Pembroke schoolroom on Tuesday evening, when the following took part in an excellent programme: Miss Robinson (pianoforte solo), Miss Rowe (recitation), Miss Moon (song), Miss E. Rogers (song), Ml'. Rowe (comic song), Miss Sheahan (song), Mesdames Tizard (recitation) and Carter (song), Mr. Walters (song), Mr. Lister (song), Mr. Lester (violin solo). The accompanist, Miss Robson, deserves special praise for her Valuable assistance. A dance followed the concert. The Stratford Oddfellows have risen to the occasion by taking up £4OO in the war loan. Mj. W. Beavins, East Road, has received a cable stating that his eldest son, Private V. Walter Beavins, was wounded and. gassed on August 11 and admitted to hospital. Mr. and Mrs. H. Kenny. Flint Road, were iarewellA by their neighbors on Wednesday evening, prior to leaving for N'ew Plymouth, presentations being made to them, as a token of esteem, by Mr. Birkett. who wished them "God-speed." Mrs. John O'Connor, late of Pohokura, who has been living with her sister-in-law, Miss O'Connor, of Rosalind Street, Stratford, died suddenly this morning. She was only 29 years of age, but had been worried* much over the death of her husband a '.ouple of months ago. and this told on her health. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. Briekell, formerly of Tututawa. Mr. T. Lamason notifies his weekly auction sale for Saturday, when a quantity of furniture will be sold on behalf of a client. Mr. B. J. 'Peters' jewellery sale will soon be at an end. Prices have been considerably reduced in the many lines he is carrying. When next in Broadway just take notice of the superb jewellery He is offering at such low figures that should ensure a ready sale. Gifts suitable for wedding presentations, farewell wristlet watches, engagement souvenirs, etc., are all there awaiting the buyers. Don't neglect this opportunity— Advt. Easily the best place in town for toys for children is Mr. C. E. James' warehouse. Whilst the kiddies are catered for the adult is not forgotten and the shelves are crowded with fancy goods so dear to the heart of the ladies. Ladies' leather goods, jewellery, etc,, are in great variety, whilst "smokes" for father (and pipes, too) are in every brand.
