Black, late of' New Plymouth, died last Saturday at the age of. 83 years. , ■Mr. R. A. Armstrong, president of the New Zealand Second Division League, arrived in New Plymouth last evening. Ha speaks to-night in the Good Templal Hall. ' Mrs. E. A. O'Donnell, Brown street, New Plymouth, received a eable message yesterday stating that her son, Private J. J. O'Donnell, has been admitted to the New Zealand general hospital at Brockenhurst, severely wounded. Cable advice has been received by by Mrs. W. Lock that her husband, 'Private William Lock, has been invalided ' home and expected to arrive in Auckland shortly. Private W.. Lock left with' Colonel Malone in the Main Body. Earl Grey, whose death is reported ill the cables, was a son of General Hon. Charles Grey. Bcauchampi, of Lower Mangorei, has received a letter containing cheerful news of her son, "Private Eric Boauchamp, well known in New Ply« mouth. ITc had the good luck to coino through the Messines battle unscathed, and since spent his furlough in visiting relatives in England and touring Scotland, being treated everywhere with the utmost kindness and hospitality. On returning to France he was transferred to the transport service, and at last advices was about to leave for Belgium. In tlio sudden death on- Saturday of Mr. Manson T. West, Taranaki loses another of her pioneer settlers. Mr. Weßt came from King's County, Nova Scotia, in (lie sailing vessel Oteola (Captain Matheson) 40 years ago with his brother Mr, Charles West, of Fitzroy, and he settled in Ngaere 35 years ago. Leasing his farm, he worked in Ngaere Co-oper-ative Cheese Factory, and was managar for about 12 years. Later he left for Dalefield Factory, and was manager there for about 12 years. Ahout fivo years ago his health gave way, and had been indifferent up to the time of his death at the age of 04 years. Of the latter, one is farming in the King Country, and the other three are serving their King and country in France. Mr. Thos. Taylor, of Waitara.- hag received the following letter, dates, from ■.France, 20th July:—"lt is with c gret. that I have to inform you of death of your son (No S/2738) 'LanceCorporal R. Taylor, who was killed early this morning (June 20th) by a shell. It will be some small consolation to you to know that he was killed While carrying out his duty, and tljflt death was instantaneous. ■ We had just returned from work we were carrying out, and your son was taking liis section back when the enemy started shelling again. I have known him practically ever ginoe lie joined up with us, and cannot speak highly enough of hira as a soldier and a man. He was always cheerful and bright, under even the most adverse circumstances, and a splendid example to the men under him. All the company unite with me in offering you our deepest sympathy in your loss, and at the sam# time express our deep regret at the losa ,of a gallant comrade. He was buried in the cemetery near here, and every care Vvill be taken of his grave. His personal effects will bo sent on to you. Again expressing my deepest sympathy. —H. Itaninglon, 2nd. Lieut." '
