LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the North Taranaki head centre of the Royal LifeSaving Society was held in the Soldiers' Club last night, Mr. D. .). Hughes presiding over an attendance of about 20 members. A number of apcflogies for absence were received. The chairman stated that though, owing to the war, its operations had to be curtailed, the centre had done remarkably good work during its first year, particularly among the schools, this work would be extended during the coming season, when it was hoped to visit several of the schools and give demonstrations of life-saving on land, prior to the opening of the season. He expressed his pleasure at the interest taken by many of the teachers in the Society's work. He referred to the keen interest taken in the Eltham school, where practically every child could swim. He expressed gratification at the large increase in membership, and mentioned that a large number of members had gone to the front. Referring to the fact that .CO Ss _7d had been granted by the Dominion executive, with a recommendation that I it he utilised for providing a pennant' trophy for annual competition anions schools, he stated that he himself would donate £.3 Ss for another trophy /or a similar purpose. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the executive stated that at a largely attended meeting held in the town hall in 191G, the head centre was formed with an initial membership of 4!) and 2 alliliatiuns. In scltc of so many of our members and award holders (being away on active service, t.'.'c year has been productive of remarkably jjood results, the membership ha-ving increased to 100 and !) affiliations, while a total of 182 awards have ■been issued. Special mention must be made of Mr. N. A. Christiansen, who obtained the Society's diploma, his aggregate marks being !7L and Miss E. White, who gained the award of merit with 93 points. It was proposed parly in the season to arrange for a touring demonstration team to visit most of the schools in the centre's district, but this project had to be abandoned. Demonst.'ations were, however, given jit Fitzroy, East End. Waitara, Eltham, mid, on several occasions, at the municipal baths. A combined demonstration and lecture, followed by a practical exhibition and instruction at the baths, was given to a- gathering x of about 300 school teachers, a few of whom subsequently gained their certificates. A special grant of £0 Ss 7d had lieen received from the Dominion Executive, with a recommendation that a pennant or cup be provided for annual competition among pupils of primary and secondary schools. With the institution of such a competition, strenuous efforts should be made by the school teachers to have their schools represented, and at the same time to give their pupils the opportunity of learning the valuable j art of life-saving. Stroud. X. AA'intcr, and C. Roebuck, a small girl, who was using water wings in the surf, being carried seme distance out before being rescued. AA 7 aitava The AA'aitara Seaside Society (inc.) had this year carried out practices with the surf reel, receiving much information from a head centre team which visited them in January. Efforts were made to secure the Tabor Shield, and a team for this purpose was sent to Xew Plymouth. Eltham steadilv carried on 'with the pupils of the District High, School, with the result that 4 medallions and 20 proficiency certificates were secured. . Bovs High 'School.—The tfew "Plymouth Bovs' nigh School has done very well indeed, the classes under their own hon. instructors obtaining 71 'awards, including " teachers' and 2 hon. instructors' certificates.

Mr. McElroy spoke in high terms of the work done by the society, especially in the schools. The chairman stated that the secretary wsa entitled to most of the kudos. Mr. Christens.en stated that the executive had endeavored to create interest, in life-saving matters in schools. Quite a number of schools had failed to reply to cimilars, but it was hoped that a visit to (lie schools might have the effect of creating enthusiasm, NEW MEMBERS. Blackley will again be asked to accept the position of lion, medical examiners. The date of meeting was fixed for the second Wednesday in cadi month.
