MOTHER COUNTRY.
A TERRIFIC HURRICANE. CROPS DAMAGED. Received Aug. 30, 12.50 a.m. London, Aug. 20. A hurricane, sometimes attaining a velocity of 100 miles an hour, swept tho couth of England and Wales for twentyfour hours. Several 'wrecks occurred in the Channel, where there were the worst August gules on record. Much damage was done to fruit and wheat crops, thousands of acres (><' wheat being cut, and harvesting has been impossible for ten days. The shortage of labor makes it impossible for many farmers to repair the damago by hand labor, particularly in the hop fields. Serious floods have occurred in Wales, and the situation in Ireland, owing to the rains, is also serious. LABOR-SOCIALIST CONFERENCE. London, Aug. 2S. The Inter-Allied Socialist and Labor Conference has met, Mr. Henderson presiding. Many delegates privately and openly expressed serious misgivings.,expecting that tho palaver will colla/pse oefore the end of the programme is reached, as points on which they are likely to disagree are far more important than, those on which they agree. MINERS WANT HIGHER WAGES. London, Aug. 27. The Miners' Federation is applying for. an advance of 75 per cent, in wages owing to tho higher cost of living. RAINS INJURE CROPS. London, Aug. 2S. Torrential rains continue in many districts in England and Wales, and are seriously damaging the corn and late hay crops. (Blight is doing considerable damage to potatoes.
