INTER-COLLEGE TOURNEY. • By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurch, Aug. 2:.. The annual inter-collegiate and iujerschools football tourney v>>is opened this afternoon in magnificent weather. The former was played on the Christ's College grounds, anil the latter at the Addington showgrounds. There was a very big crowd at both grounds, and spkiidio. football was witnessed, Christoliureli College, thanks to a heavier and more vigorous pack, defeated Wellington College bj--20 points lo 9, after a fast mime. Williams and Hargreaves (2), Tothill, Burdon, Cowlishaw. and Straehan scored tries for Christ's College, two being converted. The Wellington scorers were Scott (2) and Sutherland. The Timaru and Southland High Schools also met, and a very fine open game resulted. Except in the closing stages the game was by no means onesided. Tinmrif played very fine football, and Southland also gave a taste of their quelitic- in scoring the best try of the match. Timaru won by thirty points to three. Tries for Tiniiru were scored bv Cabot. Shaekhdon, Irwin, Fahey, Rorlhwell (2), Williams and Scott, three being converted. Half way through the second half Southland rallied, commencing with a pas-dug rush just inside the half war. It was an exceptionally pretty passing rush, in which the ball was beautifully handled by all the back--, and ended in Morgan running round behind the posts. In the vainc between Otago High School and" Christ church High School, the vi'silors wen easily. Otago made a forward game of it for Hie most part, thoiiL'h when tliev found that the Christchurch hoys' tackling was not very strong ihcy opened up the play more. The Otairo'forwards came round scrums very quickly k too quickly, in fact, and this' prevented the home team from setting their speedy backs in action. Otago won hv sixteen points to live. Tries were scored for Otago by Treahy and Ray (2), and Cray, two being converted. Mehrtens scored for Christchurch. WELLINGTON v. WAIRARAPA. At Wellington on Saturday n representative match was played between teams representing Wellington ami Wairarapa. the players being under military age. Wellington had a runaway victory, registering 30 to I heir opponents' 3. A curtain-raiser between the schoolboys of the same districts ri-suUtd in favor of Wellington by 12 points to tic ,The mateli between Hawera and Opu nake, played at the show grounds, Hawera. on Saturday. \\A> keenly contested and interesting throughout, Owing to a mishap to their lorry at Manaia, the visitors were late, and therefore play was late in starting'. During the first spell the only score ',\as a goal for Hawera from a penalty kick, Wills converting with a line kick. Opanake strove hard to equalise matters, but llawera by good defence kept them out. Play right to the end was keen and good.SUr.
