MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
HAWERA SITTINGS. At the Hawera sittings of tho Military Appeal Board on Monday, the appeal of 'Patrick Edward Callaghan, farmer Ngaere, whose ease was previously before the Board, was reconsidered. The appellant said there were no changes in his circumstances since he was before the Board in May last. , The appeal was dismissed, leave being granted until December 11, John Saxon Barleymuii, farmer, Kaponga, who was represented by Mr Weir, appealed on tho ground of publie interest and undue hardship. The appellant gave evidence that he managed a freehold farm for his widowed mother. He was milking 50 cows by machine. He had no brothers and had no assistance whatever on the farm, except his mother, who was in delicate health. (Medical certificate produced). To Captain Walker: He had not endeavored to get share-milkers. He believed the farm could not be worked by share-milkers. Mrs S. J. Johnston, Okotuku, Waver - Icy, for whom Mr O'Dea appeared, applied for time for her employee, William Alexander White. Mrs Johnston said the only other assistant on the farm was her own- son, who was almost a cripple. She only desired time to enable all the heavy work on tho farm to be completed. White was really managing the farm for witness. / The appeal was dismissed, and White was granted leave until November 13. The appeal of Kenneth Carmichael, dairy farmer, Kakaramea, which was previously before the Board, was reconsidered. The appeal was adjourned until December 30, when it will be further considered.
Gerald Francis Walsh, contra-ctor, Stratford, for whom Mr O'Dea appeared, said he desired time until the October draft to enable him to finish a fencing contract. The appellant mentioned that he was married and he also wanted financial assistance. The Board decided to recommend financial assistance, and adjourned the appeal until it had received the determination of the Finance Assistance Board.
The appeal of Thomas Henry Carr, farmer, Pohokura, whoso case was previously before the Board, was reviewed. Mr O'Dea appeared for the appellant. . Tho appellant said he was looking after another person's farm besides working his own property, which he ' Id in partnership with another, who was in poor health. He had no assistance whatever.
The Board reserved its decision sine die, provided the appellant reports to the group commander monthly ,that he is still in the same position. The appeal of Robert Stanton, dairy liand," Araratn, was .allowed on the ground that he is under age. Stanley Roy Walters, butcher, Manaia, for whom Mr O'Dea appeared, appealed on the.ground of public interest and undue hardship. Evidence was given by the appellant AS to his financial position. He said that ho had a wife and also his mother to support. His brother, who was in partnership with him, was at the front Counsel pointed out that the appellant was pretty much in the same position as a .Second Division man. The Board reserved its decision, The appeal of Bernard Cleland, far> •mer, Kaponga, which was previously before the Board, was reviewed, and decision was reserved. The case of Henry Walker Harrison, dairy farmer, Hawera, whose appeai' ( was'previously considered, was again reviewed. Apnellant said he had not tried to get share-milkers. The Board reserved its decision. Tho appeal of Michael J. Lynskey, which was before the Board last week; .was adjourned sine die.
