PREVENTION OF WHARF ACOTOBNTS By Telegraph - l''w; Association Wellington, Aug. 20. A deputation of the Waterside Workers' Federation waited on the Minister «f Marine, Mr. liussell, to-day to urge that more extensive powers be granted •r. with the view id preventing ii coidents. The deputation pointed out that there vvero 2)ii accidents in Wellington last year among l.'iOO members. Many of the nceidents were unavoidable, but more supervision "was wanted. The -Minister replied that if the waterHide unions supplied him with lists of the accidents he would have thein checked. so as to trace who was responsible for them. CATHOLICS' DUTY TOWARDS WAS LOAN. Christelrarch, Aug. 20. At the Roman Catholic Cathedral, P-ishop iirodie, in a sermon, said he felt Catholics would regard it as their duty to do what they could to further the success of the Liberty Loan. In placing the claims of the war loan before their people the Catholic clergy were only doing what the bishops and clergy hail ilono in other oountries. In England the bishops took a most prominent part in' similar work, while in Frauce the bishops Issued special pastoral letters to the people explaining tneir obligations towards providing the 'finances necessary for the war.
Those who were blessed with money to spare should feel themselves called Upon to help these movements as an appreciation of the bravery and sacrifices of New Zealand soldiers, and as a mark of gratitude to God for tho liberty and privileges they enjoyed, for which those soldiers were fighting.
