STRATFORD.

(From Our Our Correspondent). Stratford, Aug. 16. Tangible-evidence that the Tuna suppliers have broken away from the Midhirst Company is shown by the fact that the suppliers in that part of the Midhirst district have signed a joint and several with the bank, and a contract has been let to Mr. J. W. Boon to erect a 3 or 4vat cheese factory, ft was c.vpccted that the carting of shingle to be used in the building would commence to-day. It is understood that an outside linn was prepared to finance the suppliers, but the latter preferred to accept the undertaking themselves. Street and office talk has now centred on the big efforts of the Highland Society here on Saturday. The promoters are noted for the thoroughness with which they carry out details and the present occasion promises to prove no exception to the rule. The Stratford Cadets and High School boys had many strenuous contests this season. On Saturday they again meet, when a charge for admission will be made. Those who enjoy witnessing a good, clean football will have an opportunity afforded them on this occasion.

Judging by the number of socials and dances being held in this district, one would imagine our evenings arc passed in a constant whirl of frivolity. To a certain extent this is correct, but unfortunately, with rare exceptions, the occasions are the means of bringing country folks together to bid farewel! to departing soldiers. To-night functions of this description will be held at Toko and Ngaere. There has been an insistent and unsatisfied demand for carpenters and painters in this district. To some it may appear that, building operations are at a standstill, but this is not so, as I notice a f.-w buildings in the course of erection on the outskirts of Stratford. Reliable pointers, I am assured, are very hard to find, and employers state good men can command almost any terms nowadays. T. LAMASON'S WEEKLY REPORT. Last Saturday our usual sale was held, when poultry and produce was in keen demand. We quote as follows: Hens. Is lOd to 2s fid; others, 2s 7d to 3s: ducks, 2s fid to 2s lid; roosters, Is 6d to 4s; geese. 4s !)d to 5s 9d; turkeys, 5s Cd to 5s !!d; cabbage, 3s dozen; cauliflower, 2s to 3s dozen; parsnip, 2s fid bag; potatoes (Canterbury) 10s to lis sack: potatoes (reds) 14s sack; wheat, 7s fid bushel; pigmeal, 17s sack; furniture and sundries at usual auction rates.

The long winter evenings are still on hand. To those who find time hangs heavy a visit to Mr. C. E. James' warehouse will soon provide a remedy, as he lias in stock all classes of parlor games for young and old. Besides amusements, the warehouse has a large range of Doulton ware, whilst the range of jewellery should satisfy all tastes. The smoker can secure all classes of tobaccos, cigars and pipes at lowest prices. "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever," and the place to secure beautiful things is in an up-to-date jewellery stock. Mr. Ben. J, Peters, of Stratford, in announcing the success attending his sale efforts which is now in full swing, lays stress on the class-value of the bargains now offering, and whether it be to-day. to-morrow or the next day, you are sure to have the choice of quality goods, nothing else. The romantic side of life must not be lost sight of, as romance has a direct bearing on our stability. Young men arc requested to fall in love and then into lien. J. Peters' sale for a good engagement ring. A nice choice in presents awaits reciprocating young ladies."
