THE TRAMWAYS.
ENGINEER'S MONTHLY REPORT. In his monthly report to the New ' Plymouth Borough Council the tramways manager (Mr. R. H. Bartley) gives the following returns for the month of July:— Main Route.—Mileage run, 11,349 miles; revenue per car mile, 12.8 d; passengers carried, 80,680; passengers per car mile, 7,-6; average fare per passenger, 1.7 d; total fares, £BOB Ob Id. Morlay-Eliot Street Route.—Mileage Tun, 2542 miles; revenue per car mile, 7.2 d; passengers carried, 12,991; passengers per car mile, 5.1; average fare pe» passenger, 1.4 d; total fares, £76 17s sd. Combined routes.—Total mileage run, 13,891 miles; revenue per car mile, ll.Sd; passengers carried, 99,671; passengers per car mile, 7.1; average fare per passenger, l.Od; total fares, £684 17s 6d. In making the comparison with the corresponding month (July) of last year the above figures show an increase of £67 2s 6d and that 12,839 additional .passengers have been carried. The gen-, eral working conditions of the department during the month have been normal and I have no service interruptions or irregularities to report. The work of overhauling the equipment and the varnishing of car bodies is still proceeding and will be completed about the end of (his month (August).
ELBCTRIC LIGHTING DEPART, f . t MENT. Nineteen applications for the electrical supply have been received during the month, and fifteen new consumers'have been connected to the system. The maximum load > register at the power-house during the month was 445 K.W'a., or equivalent to 588 horse-power. This load is under the maximum received for the previous month (June), 'but constitutes very nearly a full load for the stationunder the present conditions. The running of the mains throughout the town, in connection with the firei alarm system (as per arrangement with the New Plymouth Fire Board) has been completed with the exception of one or two insulated crossings, and these will be put in as soon as the board is ready. A start has been made with the erection of tbo series street lighting and 1 expect to have one circuit complete and in operation before the end of the month. Re alterations and additions to power-j house.—l understand from the contract-' arts that the most of the new plant, if not all, is now on its way to New Zea--land and should all arrive here during* the nest two months. The contractors for the alterations to the buildings have made a start and should be finished in good time and thus avoid any delay in£ the erection of the machinery.
