NUMEROUS AERIAL FIGHTS. London, August 9. The United Press correspondent at headquarters reports that a sunshiny day has stimulated aerinl and artillery warTare and aeroplanes on both sides are swarming in the thunderous cloudy The Germans are-, desperately endeavoring to ascertain the changes in the British front since the unspeakable weather began. There/ have been numerous local fights and the enemy has heavily shelled the lines north-eastward of Loos, hi the icgion of the Ypri's-Cotnines Canti), and in the Lombartzydc sector. The Canadians raided north-westward of Lens and the British made gas attacks on the Germans along the sand duues.
HEAVY ARTILLERY WORK. Received Aug. 10, 5.5 p.m. Amsterdam, Aug. 9. Terrific gunfire in a westerly direction wa heard on the frontier on Wednesday afternoon, followed by three great explosions.

GERMAN GAS SHELLS AT ARMENTIERES. Paris, Aug. 9. The civilian population has been compelled to evacuate Armentieres, as the enemy, for some days, lias thrown in a multitude of guwll shells containing a colorless liquid which evaporates slowly, producing a heavy gas, which filters through the passages and descends into the cellars. Its effects are similar to those of the lachrymatory shells. Women are the chief sufferers; the use of tobacco is found to be an antidote.
