WAITARA WEST ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING,. (From a Correspondent)', The ordinary meeting of the Waitara West Road Board was lie-Id on Tuesday at Lepperton when there were present: Messrs Lepper (chairman), Copeatake, Tnrnbull, Surrey and Diggins. Mr. Diggins, pursuant to notice, moved that tho board adopt the principle of keeping a separate road account in future, on the ground that it would analbe the board to do justice to ratepayers. The position at present was that the ratepayers who did contributa enough for maintenance of their road would demand of the board expenditure which they were not entitled to, and would jet it, through no road accounts being kept to indicate the rx sition of their finance, whereas the ;•■ ' that yielded a fairly large revenue \uniid be refused, through not knowing their financial position. He maintained that this procedure was unjust to the ratepayers, whose trustees they were, and who expected justice from the board. Cm being put, the motion was lest, tho chairman remarking that the pooling method suited them best, as it was less trouble both to the board and the clerk. Mr. Diggins said that apparently the object of the board in pooling the rates was to favor their friends. Mr. Tnrnbull objected to Mr. Diggins' reference to the members of the board being influenced by friendship, and asked Mr. Diggins to withdraw the remark. This Mr. Diggins declined to do, as he was certain lie was right. Tho Advances to Settlers Office notified the rejection of a petition for raising a loan for road metalling on the ground that the petition was witnessed by an interested ratepayer. Mr. Old wrote asking the board's permission re the taking of 18 feet of the road reserve.—Request declined, the board having no power to grant it, Mr. Wheatley is to be informed that his action in shifting his fence out on the road reserve makes him liable for damages that might be incurved by the traveling public. Accounts amounting to £125 Os Od were passed for payment.
