DISTRICT NEWS.
PUNGAREHU. (Fr,om Our Own Correspondent.) A social organised by the Pungarehu ladies 1 for the purpose of providing Christmas hampers for the Pungarehh boys at the front was held in the Pungarehu hall on Wednesday evening. The gathering was one of the best ever held in the hall, and reflects great credit on the ladies of the district. A canvass for donations was made and met with a ready response, £25 being collected. Various prizes, both useful and ornamental, were donated for the guessing competitions. The hall was beautifully decorated with flags, flowers and ferns. Flower and lollie stalls did good business. Mr. M. Fleming was - chairman, and expressed great pleasure in presiding over such an enjoyable and successful entertainment, The following are the cash donations: —Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin and A. Symons, and Mrs. Layman, Mrs. Barrett and Mrs. Campbell XI each; Messrs H. Goodwin, 'P.Brophv, W. Cooper, F, Phillips, J. Doody, Mrs. Bowers, W. A. Harrison, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Grenfell, 10s each; Mr. E. Taylor, 15s; T. Hodge, W. H. Keasberry, A. ICalin, J. Fleming, A. Hansen, 5s each; M. Schonbackler, 3s; Miss Margaret Mouldy, 2s Odj Mr. Rutherford, 2s 6d; total, £25,
Prizes were donated by Mr. F. Phillips (2), Mrs. H. Goodin, Miss Dew, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Grenfell, Mrs. Pope, Mrs. R. Dawson, Miss Taylor and Mr, H. Goodin. Miss Eawlingson donated the sweets. Vocal items were rendered by Messrs. •Jenkin and Vinsen (Okato), Mr. Smith and Mrs. Wright. Mrs Pope supplied the music for thedanee also accompaniments, extras being given by Mrs. Harrison and Mr. Layard. During the evening Mr. Keasberry rendered musical selections. A generous and dainty supper was provided by the ladies. The gross takings amounted to £54 6s lOd.
IIURFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent). On Friday night, July*"2o, the residents of Hurford Road took" the opportunity of tendering a welcome home to Private E. Loveridge, who has been invalided home through catching a bullet, which he still carries. The evening took the course of card playing, singing, and dancing. JJr. E. Williams delivered a ■very suitable speech, which was followed 'by all singing "For He's a Jolly Good ■Fellow."
On the following Monday night a smoke concert was held at Mr. E. Walsh's residence in honor of Messrs. T. Walsh and C. Kendall, who left the following day for camp. On behalf of the guests' friends, Mr. P. Raill in a neat little speech, presented each with a silver mounted pipe. Among those present were Messrs J. Belshaw and H. Smith, of other districts, who also proceeded to camp the following day. A pleasant evening was spent in songs, recitations and toasts, Mr. Gilbert well filling his part of the programme at the piano. The evening was brought to a close by the singing of "For They are Jolly Good Fellows" and the National Anthem.
