ON THE SEA.
BATTLES WITH SUBMARINES. AMERICAN DESTROYERS ENGAGED. New York, Aug. 1. Reports received here state that American destroyers in British waters engaged two submarine, which were six miles distant, forcing them to submerge and beat a retreat One U-boat had just sunk a steamer, while the second was attacking a nierchantman, when tue destroyers tired. One submarine was of the super type, A French tank steamer beat off two U-boats after a desperate light.
