GAS STRIKE .SETTLED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Prehiier states that the gas works strike has been settled. At the first conference this morning an agreement *vas arrived' at and any outstanding points are to be settled by arbitration, tho arbitrator to be the president of the Arbitration Court if he will accept the position. Mr. Massev adds that tlie possibility of serious trouble has been averted. MODERATE LEAGUE'S REQUEST. Wellington, Aug. 1. The Dominion conference of the Modcrate League passed a resolution expressing strong disapproval of tho report of the National Efficiency Board on the liquor question, and renewing its protest against the constitution of the Board and tlie manner of the inquiry. The conference urges the Government to set up immediately a competent Royal Commission, consisting of men unbiassed and uncommitted, to thoroughly examine the whole of the liquor question with, a view to comprehensive and permanent temperanco reform.
THAMES GOLDFIELDS JUBILEE. Thames, 'August 1. There was n large gathering at Thames to-day in celebration of the jubi)eo of the opening of the goldfield in August, IS-6T, Many visitors were present from Auckland and elsewhere. The function included a procession through the principal street, a civic reception of pioneers, addresses by the .Mayor, county chainjian, and district member, ami later a luncheon to the pioneers, the Mayor presiding. The speakers included Mr. McCullough, the oldest living ex-Mayor. At the commemoration service this afternoon, the principal speaker was the Rev. W; J. Williams (Christehurch), the only living Thames pioneer minister. Father Dignan also spoke, and other ministers took part. The celebration nvill close this evening with a concert.
THE ■HENDERSON' MYSTERY. Hamilton, Aug. 1. Concerning the wounded ex-soldier Henderson. who was found at Frnnkton on July 8 seriously injured, nothing further has transpired. Henderson is* still in hospital and declines to make a (statement. The police are reticent. SEDITIOUS UTTERANCES. 'Wanganui, Aug. 1. Mr. TTiewitt. S.M., jto-dav sentenced Fred.
