USING GERMAN SHIPS. COPING SUBMARINES. Australian Cable Association. Received July 29, 6.5 p.m. New York, July 28. It is officially announced that the American flag has been hoisted on the steamship Vaterbmd (54,232 tons grow) Mid fifteen other German ships, which we being rapidly fitted for transport Service.
Tie New York Time*' Washington correspondent writes that the highest authority states that the best information available to the United States Government indicates that Germany is operating not more than two hundred sub-, marines, and Is turning out three or four submarines weekly, and that the Allies are destroying oh the average ono weekly. Every effort is being centred on the co-ordination of the United States, British, and French navies, so as to increase the destruction aa a set-off to the submarines. Naval officers regard seriously the report that Germany is producing 5000-ton submersibles.
A BUDGET DP 'BILLIONS. Washington, July 27. The War Budget for all Government departments totals fifteen billions dollars (£3,000,000,000). New York, July 27. Tho New York Herald estimates that the new War Budget will be increased to nearly ten billions (£2,000,000,000), including additional loans to the Allies. Washington, July 27.
The war trade intelligence section of the Exports Council is sending representatives to all neutral ports in order to check imports and thus prevent supplies reaching Germany.
. DRAFTING OF ALIENS. Washington, July 27. The Senate Military Committee voted recommending for the immediate passage of legislation providing for the drafting of aliens in the United States at an early date.
