BETTING CHARGES AT WANGANUI. By Telegraph—Press Association . Wanganui, July 25. At the' Magistrate's Court to-day William Ryan, Robert Ryan and David Ross were charged with loitering for the purpose of betting. The prosecution relied on the evidence of two plain clothes constables, who watched the movements, of the three defendants at the time of the Wanganui Taces in May last. The defence was a denial of the charges. The magistrate reserved Ms decision. Similar charges against a number of other men 'were adjourned.
HOME FOR INCURABLES. Christchurcb, July 25. This afternoon a home for incurable and chronic cases was opened at the hospital. It will be known as the Chalmers Memorial Ward, and was the gift of Miss Jean\ Chalmers, of Ashburton. The building and equipment cost £IO,OOO.
BURGLARS BUSY. Christchurch, July 25. Burglars are busy in Christchurch. On Sunday two shops with dwellings iittached were entered oivd goods and cash stolen. Last evening a dwelling in Lincoln road was broken into and £2B stolen. In this case the thief or thieves operated while the farnily was at tea.
SUCCESSFUL SHEEP DRIVE. Waimate, July 25. As the result of a lar<re sheep drive throughout the country. 925 sheep realised over £ISOO at the Studholmc saleyards to-day, on behalf of the Red Cross funds.
A BOOKMAKER FINED. Auckland, July 27. Tn the Police Court George Kevin, charged with betting as a bookmaker on licensed "premises, -was fined £IOO. MARIST BROTHERS TO SERVE. Wellington, July 27. An the result of the reserved decision of the First Wellington .Military Board a Marist Brother, William Patrick Boody. has been ordered to go into camp 'oh Aujnist 22. Two others, Henry Patrick Skiffington and Thomas Augustus Holborow, have been found medically unfit for service abroad. Three appeals were dismissed.
BANKRUPT LAND AGENT CONVICTED. Ohristchuroh, Last Nigh* At the Police Court, W. W. Illenrfer. n bankrupt land and estate agent, -tos convicted on two charges of failing to account for rents received. Sentence was postponed pending a further investigation.
A CONVTCTTON WTTHGUT A PENALTY. Christchurch, Last Nieht. At the Supreme Court Edward Henrv Eoaddon, 21 years of age, convictel of stealing goods valued at £Ol, the property of the motor -company which employed him, was ordered to come up for sentence when called on.
THE STRATFORD-ONGARUE RAILWAY. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation, accompanied by Auckland members of Parliament, waited on tli? Minister of Public Works to urge the completion of the eastern end of the main trunk line between Stratford and Ongarue. The Minister said it was net a question of money, but of obtaining the necessary labor. Be hart been compelled for this reason to ask Cabinet not to insist on contractors fulfilling contracts. As soon as he could obtain the necessary labor the -work advocated by the deputation would be commenced.
(Our special correspondent states that tlie deputation, which was a large one, ■was introduced by Mr. W. T. Jennings, the member for Taumarumii, the speakers being the chairman of the Ohura County Council, fiie Mayor of Taumarunui an'd settlers. There were 15 members of Parliament present. Our correspondent adds that Mr. Fraser promised to concentrate all available men on this work from some linos that are near completion, as he recognised the justice of the claim.)
