SCHOOL COMMITTEES' GRANTS.
MINISTER ASKED FOB. IN'OUEASE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The representatives of school committees, who have been conferring in AA'ellington, waited on the Minister of Education to-day asking for increased allowances, as owing to the greatly advanced cost of stationery and other materials to 'be supplied to the pupils, the committees could not maintain the schools. They asked for an additional Is >(kl per head for incidentals, which would mean an additional £SOOO to £12,000 yearly. The Minister promised to bring the matter 'before Cabinet. In examining the Education Boards' accounts he found the state of financial affairs calling for remedia! treatment. The boards should be able to make more liberal grants to committees. He could not say what sum would be provided this year, 'but was prepared to consider a small additional grant to committees.
