THE TOLL GATES QUESTION.

ABOLITION OPPOSED. A meeting of representatives of the Eltham, HaiWera, Taranaki, and Stratford Counties and Kaponga Town Board was held in Eltham on Monday to discuss Mr. C. A. Wilkinson's Bill, now before the House, for the abolition of tollgates. It was resolved: "That this conference of delegates of locnl bodies concerned strongly opposes the Bill for the albolition of toll-gates, and that a deputation from the local bodies represented interview the Minister upon the matter." It was also resolved: "That this conference is strongly of opinion that no toll-gate be albolished until counties without outlet are merged in adjoining counties, or counties providing outlets, or constituted counties with community of interests."
