that there occurs now and again cases of gross carelessness in the disposal of rubbish and house waste. Some bouses in this now thickly populated area have no drains of <iny kind; the 'water is simply thrown on the ground." In many of the older houses the sanitary fittings are not up-to-date and others again are out of repair. If people realised the dangers arising from leaky pipes and dirty drains there would not be the amount of sickness prevailing. I notice that a large number of the fowl bouses do not confirm to by-law. No record has been kept of the number of pigs in tbe outskirts of the borough. lam compiling a list and will report from time to time. During the month I have inspected a group of houses on tbe beach at Moturoa beloiv the hotel. The sanitary arrangements litre are altogether unsatisfactory; in fact, it is doubtful if the Public Health Department would alio.* people to live in these houses upon any consideration. The site is very wet and the houses are built on the ground.
