CLAIM FOR EXEMPTION.

HEADMASTER TATCKS UP EXTRAORDINARY ATTITUDE. Auckland, Tuesday. Before the First Military Service Board to-day Mr, G. W. Tibbs, head master of the Auckland Grammar School, applied for the exemption of Walter J. Bishop, assistant master, on the grounds of public interest owing to his occupation. Mr. Tibbs said Mr. Bishop's presence at the school was essential to the proper carrying on of the institution. It ivas not possible to make further reductions in the staff before the end of the school year when, as a result of the new regulations for examinations he was now in a difficulty as to what he should do with his staff to cope with the extra teaching involved. The Education Department had just framed theso new regulations for intermedjate examinations. It seemed a most inopportune time to raiso the standard of examinations, an;l he could not understand any reason for it. He had appealed for two masters previously with full cognisance of the work of the'staff ahead, but if the new regulations were put into force he would have to take different steps. He suggested that the action of the Department as very detrimental to the public interest at this juncture, especially in view of the need for men. The Board expressed some surprise at tlic Department's mooted action. Mr. Elliot: "I should think the Department would consider the country and assist it at present. Have you protested?" Mr. Tibbß: "No, I am taking this opportunity of expressing my opinion on the subject." Mr. Elliott: "And the Benvd will endorse your sentiments. We should think (hat after your protest the Department will not carry out its intentions." The exemption was granted as in the previous cases till November 15.
