MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

HAWERA SITTINGS. In the cases of .T. G. McCarty and M. P. Ford, reserved decisions, the board dismissed the appeals and granted the appellants leave until August 21. The appeal of L. W. Catchpole was adjourned until the next sitting in Hawera, to enable the appellant to supply the board with particulars of his financial position. In the appeal of Otto Reichardt, laborer, Waitotara, appellant gave evidence that he was born of German parents and that he could, speak the German language. He was born in Wanganui. He had no wish to live in Germany. "The country I was born in is good enough for me," he added. The appeal vras dismissed, the chairman remarking that it would vest with the military authorities as to what they did with the man. The appeal of Taupoko Bishop, farmer, Opunake, was allowed on the ground that the appellant is a Maori. The appeal of Thomas Henry Carr, Pohokura (Mr. O'Dea), was adjourned yntil the first sitting in August. Owen Phillip Murphy, farmer, Meremere (Mr. Welsh), appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship. Evidence was given by Mrs. Murphy, that she was working a mixed farm of 328 acres and that if appellant had to go she would be unable to manage the place. Two sons had fallen at Gallipoli, two were serving in France, and one was in camp. She desired exemption until one of the song returned. Evidence was also given by appellant. Mr. Welsh said Mrs. Murphy had desired him to state that she did not wish to stand in the way of her son doing Jiis duty, in view of the fine record of the family, and if the board would grant the appellant exemption until December, tho boy would be ready to go. Decision was reserved. Subsequently the board dismissed the appeal and granted leave until December 30, provided appellant remains in his present pontic®. *
