THE EMPIRE.

(FRANK KEBNAN AND MARGERY 1 WILSON TO-NIGHT, "The Bride of Hate," commencing a three-night season at the Empire tonight, is a sensational title, antl the photo-play thus named tells a sensational story of the chivalrous yet hot-'blood-ed and revengeful folic of the Southern States of America in the old slavery days when life was far more picturesque and far more full of romantic possibilities than in these prosaic latter days. Frank Keenan shows great histrionic power in the role of a doctor and cotton planter, who in revenge for the seduc.tion of his grand-niece by a New York profligate entraps her betrayer into a marriage with a beautiful slave girl—so at least he supposes her to he. The consternation of the dandy when he finds that he is married to a "slave" may well foe imagined. Bushing from the house, he drinks deep to drown his sorrows, and strange developments follow. Haw he (meets his death; how the doctor, bravely fighting an outbreak of Yellow Jack fever, finds out that the "slave girl" is no slave smt a Spanish heiresß; and how all ends haippily, is verv vividly portrayed. The drama, with its beautiful .pictures of lovely southern scenery, of luxurious planters' homes, and of the Mississippi River with its broad, sleeping current and palatial steamers, makes a very attractive film; A further instalment of "Gloria's Romance'—"Her Fighting Spirit"—featuring the talented actress, 'Miss Billie Burke, was also screened, besides an interesting "Patlie Gazette" of topical pic-ture-paragraphs. The local film" Beauties of Taranaki," which attracted a bumper house last Saturday will also be screened to-night.
