Those interested in patriotic work (and we all should be) arc welcome to the meeting. Stratford readers of the Daily News were agreeably surprised at the splendid results achieved by the (Pierrots and others on Saturday. There are some here who believe that a direct appeal like that made in this town would also be the means of raising a good aum. Mr. "Dick" Masters is at present enjoying a spell at -Xcrw Plymouth. He was one of those who were cut up in the early Somme offensive, and was invalided home last December. The damp spell during the past few weeks has been too trying, and be hopes the sunshine (?) of New Plymouth will fix him up. My paragraph concerning him read Mr. ■lonas Masters. The latter has, like many others, been well "overcoatcd" through the weather, but not bad enough to havo to visit New Plymouth for repairs. The following are the vital statistics for the month of June, and also for the quarter ended June, supplied by Mr. Stanton, registrar:—'Births, June 24, quarter 70; deaths, 5, 21; marriages. 3, 10. A fine programme has been arranged for the social in the Toko town hall on Thursday evening. During the evening the trophies won in the milking j and swede competitions conducted by ! the Settlers' Association will be presented. The Pukengahu school will be opened the same evening with a social. This should have been held last Thursday, but was postponed till Thursday of this week on account of the counter-attrac-tions. It is expected that visitors from Ngaere and Stratford will visit in large nuirihers. The settlers hope to make the occasion a memorable one, so those attending may rely on spending a pleasant evening. Mr. Lamason, auctioneer, is holding a very big sale of household furniture and effects at Warwick Itoad to-morrow (Tuesday). Full details appear on page S of this issue, and a glance at the advertisement shows that there will ibe some extra good furniture going under the hammer. A start will be made at 1 p.m. sharp. Mr. C. K. James' great stock-reducing sale closed on Saturday. During its run the firm was kept busy attending to the wants of buyers on the lookout for best value at lowest prices. A glance through his premises shows Mr. James has now opened up with a large and varied stock of goods that fills the shelves to the utmost. Those requiring farewell, wedding, or presentation articles will save money by dealing here.*
