FURTHER BRITISH PROGRESS.
(FRENCH REPORT ARTILLERY ACTIVITY, A. and N.Z. Cable Assoc. and Reuter. Received July 2, 12.30 a.m. London, July 1. We again progressed south of Lens and captured a further portion of the trench system. We repulsed raiders south-east o'f Gonzealcourt. There have been several encounters between large formations of hostile aircraft. We brought down ten. One of ours is missing.
A Paris communique states: Great artillery activity continues on the left of the Mouse, tbetween Avoeourt wood and Mort Homme. The enemy's repeated attempts to improve his gains were frustrated, otherwise there is. nothing to report. A GERMAN REPORT. STUBBORN HGHTING. A. and N.Z. Cajble Assoc. and Reuter. Received July 1, 6.5 p.m. London, June 30. A wireless German official report states: Stubborn fights took place yesterday between, tie La Bassee canal and the Scorpe salient, 'westward and southwest of fiens, which we relinquished long ago as a fighting zone. The enemy launched an attack on the Arras road, but it was (broken. In the evening several divisions attacked between Hulluch and Mericourt, and ibetween Fresnoy and Gavrelle. We repelled the enemy near Hullueh. There were vigorous engagements westward oif Lens, where a fresh enemy attack was unable to develop. Reinforced attacks near Avion failed. The English, after bitter hand-to-hand fighting, occupied the foremost lines between Oppy and; Gavrelle windmill. They lost sanguinarily. We stormed the French positon on a front of a thousand metres eastward of Cerny, and held it against vigorous counter-attacks. We attacked the western slope of Hill 304 astride the MalanCountesnes road, on a front of 2000 metres to a depth of 500 metres, and stormed positions on the Avocouit wood front for 300 metres. SqOCE&SFUL OPERATIONS AT KOUOHESS. London, June 29. Sir Dougilas Haig reports that he attacked and captured last evening a forward position on a front of 2000 yards southward and westwai'd of Oppy, and gained the whole of his objectives. He continues to gain ground south-ward of Souchez river, on a wide 'front. We entered Avion, repulsed a raid northward of Cherisy, and successfully raided south-eastward oif Loos. FRENCH ©HATTER ENEMY ATTACKS London, June 29. A French communique states: The enemy was active last night on the Aisne front, following up a violent bombardment toy the liveliest attacks in the region of iCemy, south-east of Cortoiny, ond north-east of Rheims. All attempts were shattered and our positions maintained. The struggle Mas particularly lively in the region of Cerny. where the enemy attacked several "times. At two different points the enemy gained a footing in our first line north-east of Cerny, but energetic counter-attacks drove them out. There was an intense artillery duel on the left bank of tho Meiuse in the region of Avoeourt and at the foot of Hill 304. After violent bombardments the Germans yester-eve powerfully attacked with special storming troops on a front of two kilometres west of Hill 304. Our lire disorganised the attack, w.lnch gamed a footing at some points in our first line. Another enemy attempt east of Hill 301 this morning was completely repulsed.
