WESTERN ATTACK.
THE ADVANCE ON LENS. IN TEfiiRIHC TiHUNKEESTOBM. London, June 29. The United Press con-csptindent at headquarters says: Tiio ""ritish advanced south-west of Lens in terrific thunderstorm just 'before dark on Thursday, advancing an average of 500 yards along a tiwo-mile front. They arc sibill advancing, and are liali-way through Avion, also well south-eastward of Lens. The Germans have not counter-attacked, and al! the gains have been consolidated. The correspondent watched iflhe (battle from an elevation "behind the Canadians. A black storm-cloud came up. The vivid lightning and thunderclaps were indistinguishable from the fire Of the howitzers. The infantry stormed the outskirts o.f T.cna on the plains to the southward, to the accompaniment of iboth the heavens' and Haig's artilleries. Our aeroplanes defied the elements. They literally played with the storm and again swepit the Germans from the Sky. STRONG POSITIONS CAPTURED. WHOLE OF OBJECTIVES GAINED. A. & N.Z. Cable Association & Reuter. Received July 1, 5.5 p.m. London, June 30. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: Additional information confirms our success in the neighborhood of Lens. We made an important advance on a fiont of four miles, over a mile in depth, and captured a series of strong defensive systems on both banks of the Souchez river, covering Lens. We gained the whole objectives and inflicted considerable casualties, our lofises being slight. The enemy's positions of great strength, and tactically of strategic importance, are now in our hands. We repulsed raiders north of Gouzeaucourt front.
