The promoters of the Catholic Social havo eveiv reason to lie satisfied with the attendance at the Town Hall last night. An efficient orchestra. (Mrs. Bianchi piano, J. Walsh violin, F. Parker Cornet, and G. Bradley drum) had much to do with patrons enjoying such a pleasant evening, whilst the M.'sC., Messrs F. and J. Jans, kept things moving. Songs, recitations, etc... were contributed 'by Mrs. C. Massey, Miss Miliier. Miss Fields, Messrs G. T. Walters, T. A. Lonergan, and Miss Howe. Extras were contributed by Misses Anderson (Midhirst), Fitzgerald, and Murp'liy, and Messrs C. Fox and Lea. Young. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies.. In the recent list of -wounded published in the Daily News was the name of Private L. J. Jalies, whose father is in business here. Young Jakes enlisted in the lStli Reinforcements and received his injuries in the Messines (battle. In the same battle, unknown.to Jakes, he lost his uncle, Fred James, of New Plymouth, who waa killed. The Toko Settlers' Association intend holding a social on July sth, at iwhich the trophies won in the field and milking competitions will !be .presented. Particulars are to "be advertised later. The promoters are msikng every effort to make the social evening one of the 'best yet held. Considerable interest is feeing taken in the meeting to (be held to-night in connection with the formation of a Second Division League. Indications point to a big house and an animated discussion. On Saturday the fanners supplying 'he Stratford Dairy Factory will have the opportunity of discussing the advisa'bilityi otf manufacturing r cheese. The meeting is called for 1.30 p.m., and a large attendance is desired by the directors. Those who appreciate good crops should note the exhibit of mangolds, Jersey Queen variety, grown by 'Mr. A. .laekson, of the Stanley Road, and now being exhibited at Mr. T. ILa,mason's mart. They appear to he ifree from blemishes, and weigh about 281b each. There are many readers of the Nelws who will regret to hear that J. "Ned" Shewry, the champion axeman, has teen wounded whilst fighting at the front. A younger brother. Dave,, has paid the supreme penalty. Both brothers were wellknown in the Whangamomona district and were deservedly popular. A statement was'made that "Ned" had "gone west" Ibuf, although wounded, our axe champion hopes in due course to return and again make the chips fly m the chopping arena. The Stratford cadets fired this morning for the r»l7 senior competition of the National Rifle Association, open to all schools in the British Empire. The winneis receive a, challenge shield, value £IOO The shooting of the hoys was very good, the total being 813, and individual scoTes were as follow:—Q.M.S.M. Rogers (captain) 77, Sergeant 6. Boyle 09 Color-Sergeant G.'Harftness 69, Sergt. T.' Stoddart 69, Conporal J. Yeatea,66, Corporal R. Curtis 68, Private J. Hall SS. Lince-Corporal G. Earns 55, Sergeant H. N; Johnson 51, Sergeant 0. Coleman 42. Mr. F. C. Bowler acted as superintendent.
