SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting takes plaee to-day and tomorrow. To-day's acceptances are very fair, though withdrawals from the Hawke's Bay Hurdle race and Hawke's Bay Steeplechase were fairly solid. The Woodlands Hack Steeple ,(2 miles) has attracted fourteen, including fair performers like Czaronus and Grey Guard. Iceberg tops the poll in la field of eighteen engaged in the Wlmlcatu Hack Hurdles (1J miles), but at the weights the grey mare may find Colorado and Black Heart fairly hard to extend. Bon Reve may start favorite in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles (two and a quarter miles), but lightweights appear to liave all the best of the adjustments. Diavolo appears to be back to form again, and should be well suited by the distance. The Hawke's Bay Steeples (3 miles) will see Marton, Record, St. Elmn and Sandy Paul again measuring strides. Record was very unlucky at Greenmeadows, and provided he gets round safely he should run well to-day, though Marton should also give a good account of himself. Flash Lady and The Summit represent winning form in the Ladies' Bracelet (1% miles), and the last-named may be best suited by the distance. The two remaining flat races have drawn big fields. In the Heretaunga Handicap (6% furlongs) the issue looks very open. Antwerp has gone across to contest this race, but Parisian Diamond and King Chiara may prove more seasoned. The Winter Hack Handicap (a mile and a quarter) will test some of the hacks unduly, though ICiltess and Sir Ralph look like seeing the distance out.
