THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

SWEARING-IN CEREMONY, By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, June 28. The ceremony of swearing in Lord Liverpool as the first Governor-General of New Zealand took place at noon today in front of the Parliamentary Library, in the presence of a large number of members of the Legislature, the heads of the Civil .Service Departments, and a concourse of the public. . .■ His Excellency, accompanied by Lady Liverpool, arrived punctually at noon, and received a royal salute from the guard of honor, consisting of three companies of the 27th Reinforcements Rifle Brigade, and Senior Cadets. His Excellency proceeded to a decorated dais at the steps, supported by Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward. There the proclamation appointing Lord Liverpool Governor-General was read by the clerk of the Executive Council. The oatlm "of office and allegiance were then administered by Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, the consummation of the ceremony being signalled by a fanfare of trumpets and the royal salute. Mr. Massey called for three chesrs for the King, which were lustily given, after which he congratulated his Excellency on the honor conferred on him by the King, which, in consideration of the position taken up bv this country during the historic struggle, would place New Zealand on a level with Canada, Australia, and India. He felt confident the right thing had been done. Sir Joseph Ward added his congratulations, saying that many might not regard the change at its true worth, but anything which raised the status of the Dominion must do good. The Governor-General briefly replied, and the royal salute and National Anthem, played by the Trentham Band, terminated the proceedings.
