WELLINGTON BURGLARIES. A MAN ARRESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association-. Wellington, Last Night. A number of burglaries liave been committed in Wellington during the past few months, and to-day a mail named George "Cooks, an ex-barman, was arrested on five changes of breaking, entering, and theft. The premises Cooke was charged with breaking into were the Hotel Cecil, the Masonic Hotel, George and Kersley'a drapery establishment, and the 'Warehouses of Goodwill Johnson and Co. and: R. C. Kinvig, and the value of the goods stolen amounted to some hundreds of pounds. Ther police report that a considerable quantity of the goods has been recovered. SIX OPJOCK CLOSING. Nelson, Last Night. At a public meeting to-night a petition bearing signatures, praying for the closing of bars of hotels and clubs a,t 8 o'clock during the war, was presented to Mr. T. A. Field, M.P. Mr. Field intimated that lie would support the proposal. HONORS FOR NEW' ZEAUANDERS; ~ 'Auckland, Last Night. Sir James Allen has received advice of the following hoiWSrs to New Zealanders:—Distinguished Service Cross, FlightLieutenant Thomas Gray Culling, of Scmuera, Auckland, Roya,l Naval Air. Service; Military Cross, Second-Lieut. Charles Edwards Blayney, of Devonport, Royal Flying Corps. OPERATION ON A PRISONER. Wellington, Last Night. The Labor Conference to-night carried a resolution strongly supporting the request of a deputation to the Hon. Myers that the ,boy John Daintry Birch be replaced under the operation surgeon (he is now in gaol quarters); it also passed a resolution urging that the father of the lad, who has borne tbe whole of the expenses of the five weeks/ hospital treatment, the surgeon alone charging no fee, should tbe reimbursed, in view of this being a State experiment.
