INCREASED FREIGHTS.

- ♦ EXPLAINED BY UNION COMPANY. By Telegraph. —Press Association * Wellington, June 22. Questioned regarding the reported projected increase in freight on coal from .Newcastle, Mr. Aiken, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, states that the Government recently asked the company to deliver 30,'""' tons .of Newcastle coal monthly. This .....mint was Considerably more than the normal average which had heen handled with a depleted fleet, and meant that ships must i be hurried, so they could not lift return .cargoes of timber, having to go to Newcastle in ballast, thus suffering the. loss .of freight-earning capacity. The Munitions Board thereforo had recommended • an allowance of 3s per ton additional in 'cases where the vessels had to make the ' trip to Newcastle in ballast.
