TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Gisborne meeting, which is set down for Friday and Saturday, does not bear a rosy appearance. Rain has deluged the course, and the big teams of horses on their trips from Auckland and Napier must have had gruelling passages. 'Probably the going will be Very heavy, and we have still to bear in mind what condition the visiting horses reached Gisborne. Master Timi will probably carry a lot of money in his Gisborne engagements, though Kohinahina may trouble him at the end of a two-miles journey. Kauri King's consistent running at Ellerslie has focnssed attention on his engagements at Gisborne. He is in very fine form at present, and as he will, be racing over his pet distances his chance looks good. He is a noted mudlark. Sandy Paul is being mentioned in connection with the Gisborne Steeplechase. Diavolo ran well up to three miles at Ellerslie, and the local horse may find it hard to concede 31bs. The English-bred Slipstitch, purchased in England by Sir James Carroll, on behalf of Mr. de Latour, is said to be capable of improvement, and should win again shortly. Cokely, who raced prominently at tlif Great Northern meeting, has been sent down to Gisborne to contest the hack steeplechases. J. O'Shea will ride Lady Penury in her Gisborne engagements. The mare is coming on fast. During the season 191(3-17 the Auckland Racing Club's tote turnover reached the colossal sum of £508,351. The previous season £513,950 10s was handled. When Czaronus fell in the Winter Steeples at Ellerslie he broke a. bone in liis nose, and blood covered everything for yards around. The hurdle horseman Leo Traill has been drawn in the ballot. Traill enlisted twice previously. Mr. W. Duncan will retire Mia Cara and Ararat to the stud next season. J. Roach, with three wins on Tiniroto, wa&ythe premier horseman at the Great Northern meeting.
