PRICE OF BUTTER.
MAINTAINED FOR HIGH QUALITY. (From Our Own Correspondent*. Wellington, Last Night. A statement is (published locally to the effect that considerable wholesale sales of butter have been made at prices that should allow of a substantial reduction in the official retail price. Inquiries made by your correspondent to-day sf\ not confirm this report, which teems to have had its origin in Auckland. It is possible that some second-grade butter has been sold below the ruling price, but tho quantity can hardly have been large. Importers in the United Kingdom are still willing to buy New Zealand butter of export quality at the current prices, and they arc ready to treat the contracts as bills of lading for tho purposes Jf payment. In view of/this fact, and of the further fact that there is ample cold storage accommodation at the disposal of. the butter factories, it is not eauy tb see why there should be a fall in prieei..
