INGLEWOOD.
NARROW ESCAPE PROM SERIOUS ACCIDENT. (From An Occasional Correspondent). The folly of anyone on horse back trying to pass a driven vehicle on a bridge was fully exemplified on Sunday last when a young man named West, of Norfolk Road, near Inglewood, essayed the feat. He was riding towards Inglewood and at the Ngatoro bridge met a buggy containing four ladies, Mrs. Hognn and three Misses Hogan, of Tariki. Although the beast toe was Tiding gave evidence of being frightened at the bridge he tried to pass the buggy but his horac baulked and eventually fell in such a manner that the other horse, which was somewhat excited, hauled the carriage over horse and rider and one of the shafts was broken in the mix-up. As soon as it was free West's horse got up and galloped 'back the way it had come, thus still further exciting thie other which became uncontrollable and got' away at full speed, but not far for the buggy capsized a few chains south of the bridge. The horse got loose and away, but the occupants were thrown out. Two of them luckily escaped practically unscathed, while Mrs Hogan, who was thrown out on Her head, was severely knocked about and her face hurt badly and Hogan, of Wanganui, home for a week-end holiday, had her right ankle badly damaged. Fortunately the accident happened at a time of day when a number of people were going home from morning service at Inglewood and willing assistance was quickly at hand. Some good Samaritans took the ladies home, while another, hastening back to Inglewood, advised Dr. Nutting of the mishap, so that he was at the house very shortly after Mrs. and Miss Hogan had got there. Friends will be glad to know that both the patients are doing as well as can be expected; in fact, that their injuries appear to be not so serious as was feared at first. So far as is known ihe rider of the unruly horse has suffered no material injury, though it is to be hoped he has learned a useful lesson. .
