PERSONAL.

Sergeant V. C. Davies, who is at present on final-leave, will sit for his commission on his return to camp. A cable mesage from Amsterdam reports the death of Edouard Dereske, the Polish singer. The Hon. .1, A. Hanan has accepted a seat on tho University Senate, rendered vacant by the death 'of Mr. Gordon, Chief Inspector of Mines. Private S. Bass, of Xcw Plymouth, who went into camp a short time ago, has been refused for active service owing to ltneo trouble, but is remaining in camp in the hope of getting away later with the A.'S.C.

Mr. A. P. Orahani, pecretary of the 'Tarannki Hospital Board, who was previously rejected when lie volunteered for active service, was passed as fit by the Medical Board on Monday. He expects to go into camp 111 September. Mr. Hugh firieraon, the well-known Auckland architect, who designed Everybody's Theatre. New Plymouth, the Theatre Royal, Waitara, and the new theatre under construction at 'Stratford, went into camp yesterday. Police Inspector Hendrey arrived in New Plymouth from Wanganui on Thursday evening. 'Yesterday he attended to some departmental business, including a visit lo the New Plymouth Club, accompanied by Sub-Inspector Mcllveney, in his official capacity as Inspector of Clubs in the Wanganui district. He left by the midday train yesterday for Hawera, A London correspondent states that the list of New Zealand stall nurses who have been advanced to Sisters contains the names of P. M. Reynolds ("22/37), E. B. Young (22/93), and J. Sinclair (22/S8), who are well known in Tarnliaki. Miss Phoebe Reynolds and Miss Bessie Young are especially well known in Hawera, and Miss J. Sinclair in New Plymouth.

Many of the older residents of South Taranaki district will remember Mr. J. W. Kenah, and be sorry to hear of his death, which occurred at Morrinsvflle last week. If we remember aright (the Hawera Star says) Mr. Kenah was the first master of Eltham School, but at quite an early period he took to farming on a property he had acquired near Eltham. He was a well-read man, very keen on politics and other matters, and always expressed his opinions with an uncompromising directness which attracted attention and respect. In later years he suffered from ill-health and disability, and moved first to Wanganui and then northward.

The death occurred oil Thursday of Mr. Hasmus Lawson, at -his residence, Inglewood, lit tho age of 80. The deceased was a very old resident of the district, haying arrived with his wife and family of three on February 7.1875, from Denmark. In his young days deceased was a cavalryman in the Danish army, and saw service in the war 3 of 1801-4, when Schleswig-Holatein was wrested from Denmark by Austria and Prussia. He was at first engaged at Inglewood in road-making, and for several years followed farming pursuits. About threo years ago ho suffered from a paralytic stroke, from which he recovered, but for some months past lie has been gradually failing owing to a recurrence .of the trouble. He leaves a widow and family of six children, fifteen «rand-children, and threo great-grand-children. The sons and daughters are as follow: K. P. Lawson (Inglewood), Mrs. \V. Feek (Waitara), Mrs. G. 11. Amies (Palinerston Xortb), G. Lawson (Inglewood), T. Lawson (Stratford), and ,T. Lawson (to arrive this week from Melbourne). Tho interment will take place at Inglewood.
