CONDITIONS IN ENGLAND.

HAWERA OFFICER'S COMMENTS

Writing from Exeter Training Camp to his brother in Hawera, Lieut. R. Sellar gives some idea of the conditions at Home. He says, inter alia, that "living is getting extraordinarily dear Our food is worse, and our mess bills bigger. We are on ration bread; we have one meatless day and two potatoless days per week Sugar is npn est, and we get no butter—only margarine." He had suffered from a severe attack of gastric influenza, but at the time of writing was much improved. Referring to weather conditions lie says: "The past winter is undoubtedly the worst I have ever put in. T seem to have been fighting it all the time, but thing* feel brighter now. A few buds are showing and crocuses and violets are putting their heads up. It is Easter shortly. This puzzles me even more than Christmas. I simply can't realise that Easter can come in the spring. It seems to fit in so well in the autumn, and that seems to be the more appropriate season for it." Writing of the training of cadets, he says that new system is being ii.Vugurated, by which the course is being altered from three to four months Referring to the submarines, he says: "I am happy to think that this menace has not been so dreadful as was feared. lam afraid, however, it will seriously hamper imports and exports."
