FARMERS BBOOMMS3JD IMMEDIATE .■".'.~ '.. CONSCRIPTION. " . 'Auckland, May 22. The Farmers' Union provincial conference was, resumed to-day. Tlie question of the position of aliens in the Dominion and the possibility of making use of their services for war •work was discussed. It \Yas stated that there were 18,000 aliens in the province whose services could he utilised. One speaker said that he had been informed that Austrians would not accept contracts unless they were able to earn £1 a day. It was resolved that all enemy aliens should be conscripted forthwith for labor purposes. A remit that the Government be urged to restrict the importation of luxuries, especially from foreign countries, was lost.
The question of excess war profits taxation was discussed; a committee beintr set up to draft a resolution. ' The conference adopted a resolution urging the necessity for steps to meet the shipping regarding meat and dairy produce. The conference also decided that ally essential work liable to be called up during the next twelve months should have°the right to go before the .Military Board and have his position taade clear. The conference had previously rejected a remit that before the Second Division was called up the Fipt Division should be increased by the inclusion of men up to fifty years of age. It also rejected a remit that the whole of the First and Second 'Division ballots should be drawn at once, so that farmers would know the exact date when they would -have to go into camp some months ahead, likewise that the position of farmers be defined as to whether they will be required for service or if they can remain on their farms. .
