PATRIOTIC WORK.
NliW PLYMOUTH COMMITTEE. A meeting of the New Plymouth Pa* triotie Committee was held last evenlug. Present: Messrs C. H. Burge&a (chairman), C. E. Bollringer, A. H. Nb!an, J. Paton, J. R. ' 'I, W. J.'Chaney, L. M. Monteath, H. Goodacre, W. A. Collis, A. B. Gibson, C. Sadler, T. C., List. , ... A WELLINGTON APPEAL. A letter was received from the secretary of the "surprise bag day" asking for donations of goods or money for their effort on behalf of the lick and wounded soldiers in England. Members felt that there were greater claims on the. committee's funds, expressing the opinion that Wellington should confine its attention to its own district in matters of the kind.
THE PATRIOTIC FUND. The treasurer reported that the balance of the old Patriotic Fund was now £159 4s. It was mentioned that this fund would probably be augmented by about £2OO from the sale of the patriotic wheat that had been grown at Bell Block. It wasl further stated that the proceeds of the Pierrots' efforts -would also be available for this fund, which required strengthenijig in order to meet all the calls upon
The chairman said the nature, of this fund was not generally understood. Mouey was wanted for soldiers' comforts, amusements, etc., and it could not be .Irawn from the central fund, the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. He had just receivcd an application for assistance in'this way. There was no doubt tthe fund required strengthening. Mr. Nolan was of opinion that the chairman ftoßld be empowered to expend up to £lO on comforts, etc., on each transport, for the benefit of Taranaki men. But it was not a matter for Taranaki as a whole to take up? The chairman said the Taranaki War Relief Association, as such, • nothing in the matter, but he understood nther patriotic societies had b»en moving in the direction of providing comforts for the Taranaki men. Mr. List, thought the . eammittee had not in the past been as liberal in these matters as it might have been. The mistake was made in not keeping in hand more of the original patriotic fund. Other membera were of opinion that when the public were made aware of the need for further money it would readit* be subscribed. Mr. Nolan moved that the Mayor ba authorised to expend up to £lO in connection with each reinforcement.—Car* ried. THE PATRIOTIC FUND.
