Sergeant David Howden, formerly of the Bank of 'New Zealand staff at New Plymouth, has received a commission. The next of kin of Private Norman I' Sarten, reported wounded at the front, is his brother, Mr. E, J. Sarten, of TiVorangi, not Mr. E. G. Sarten, father, as previously reported.
Mr. F. M. Byrne, of Manaia, lias received cabled inforihation from London that two of liis song nt the front, Private A. E. Byrne and Gunner J. 11. Byrne, are at present in England training for commissions.
Nc,ws has been received by cablegram in Melbourne of the appointment! of Mv. Norman Brookes, the tennis player, as one of the British Red Cross commissioners in Mesopotamia. He .will loavn London immediately for Basra to undertake his new duties.
A London cable message to the Australian papers states -that the late Paul Rubens, dramatic author and composer of musical comedies, bequeathed £II,OOO to Miss Phyllis Dare, actress. They had arranged to marry at the exclusion of the run of the play "Tina." but the engagement was broken oil owing to Rubens' illness.
Mr. B. Eyre, of New Plymouth, has received word that his sou, Private L. 6. Eyre, who was wounded in France, lias loft the American Red Cross hospital in France, and is back in the trenches. A shell burst in his trench, killing one mate and seriously wounding another, but only scratching the scalp of Private Eyre.
Mr. C. H. Burgess asked last, night's meeting of the New Plymouth Patriotic Society to relieve him of the position of delegate to the Taraiiaki War Relief Association, of which he is chairman. Regrot Was expressed that the Mayor could not continue, but it' was felt that since he was devoting so much of his time to .public interests, it would bo unfair to press him to reconsider his decision, and Mr. C. E. Bellringer was unanimously appointed in his stead. An Auckland press message received last night reports the death of William Hazard, the last survivor of the 57th Rogiment, aged 77 years. He landed iu Now Zealand with his regiment 1 in 1802, nnd had eight years' service in the colony, going through the whole of the Taranaki war. After ah interval in Australia Hazard took lip land in the Manganui district, afterwards entering into business as a gum and general merchant. Steen, also a member Of the 57th Regiment, died early this month, and the loss of his friend is considered largely responsible for Hazard's death.
The Minister of Defence lias received advice that Brigadier-General E. W. C. Chaytor, officer commanding the New Zealand Mounted Bifle Brigade,, Ims succeeded to the command of a division, which usually carries the rank of majorgeneral. Colonel W. Meldrum, the. officer commanding tl'.e Wellington Mounted Rifles, succeeds Brigadier-General Cliaytor as Brigadier. Col. Meldrum, prior to the war,, had a legal practice at Hunterville, and commanded the Six'th Manawatu Mounted Bifles. He left with the 1 Main Body, as officer commanding the Wellington Mounted Rifles.—Press Association.
