SOCIALISTS ATTEND CONGRESS. CATHOLIC CLERGY UTILISED. Amsterdam, May 20. _ The Vorwarta states that representatives of both the German majority and tainority Socialist parties have been wanted passports to the Stockholm Congress. > The Deutsche Kirchen Zeitung states that the Catholic clergy in Germany have inaugurated a powerfully organised peace*movement. It adds: "After dispatching the Socialists to Stockholm , the German Government now presses the Catholics into its service for hypocritical peace efforts." It also says that the clergy intend to create a world-wide union of Eucharists. The Catholic Archbishops in other (countries have promised warm support. DESPOTISM NECESSARY. The return of Mr. Penfield (Americain Ambassador to Australia) from Vienna, and news from other sources, disclosed an ambitious German scheme to>' control half of Europe. The Germans: planned the establishment of a great military Mid economic Dominion extending from fhe North Sea to the Mediterranean, and embracing Bulgaria, Turkey, and con? trolling the Dardanelles, Baltic and the Aegean, with Austria subservient, thus, providing the foundation of a German world empire. The revelation is regarded as most conclusive proof of Germany's past projected peace manoeuvres were merely attempts to gain a truce to enable the consolidation of territory in south- eastern Europe.
