OPUNAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent). The patriotic polytechnic, held last, week, was a very succesful affilir. The sum of £IOB was realised, and a dance yet to be held will further augment the funds in aid of the wounded soldiers, The money, it is said, will he donated to the hospitals of the -New Zealand soldiers at the front. Tlu secretaries of the polytechnic were idesdamcs Stent and Rogers; the stall-holders were all young iadies, who, in organising and carrying out the work in connection with the polytechnic, did their best to make it the success it was.
A very successful social was held last Wednesday as a wind up to the polytechnic. The Grand March was led oil' by the young ladies in their pretty uniforms and dancing was enjoyed by numerous eouples. Pagrcssive uchve was played on the stage, the ladies' prize going to Mrs. O'Brien and the gentleman's prize being won by Mr. Sutton. A dainty supper was served during the evening.and Mr. Ken. Cnnnell supplied flic music. Extras were played by a number of young ladies. On Tuesday morning a quiet wedding took place in the Methodist Church at which the Row K. Gosneil officiated. The bridegroom was Private Tom S. Cox. son of Mr. and Mrs. 8. T. Cox, the l.ride being Miss Ethel H, Warner, who was dressed in a navy costume and white hat, and was given away by her brother-in-law, Mr. J. Warner. ' The bridesmaid was the bridegroom's sister. Miss Alice Cox, who also wore a navy costume. The party adjourned to Mrs. Nichol's tea-rooms, where the usual toasts were honored at a woll-sproad table. Private and Mrs. C'o.v left by motor ear en route for Wanganui, where Hie honeymoon will be spent. Numerous and costly presents marked the esteem in which the young eo\u!o are held. A letter was read at the Town Board from Mr. Callander, general manager of v.he Bank of Mew Zealand, .Wellington, stating that information received from the manager of the. t'pnnake brand!, complaining about the p. Imltlve method of the disposal of night-xil. He pointed out the serious menace to the health of the community from such methods and asked the Board to remedy it, The. P.oard replied that labor could not be obtained, lint would do their best. Tlie HealMi Department, Wellington, wrote that the sanitary slate of ()punake was bad, and rubbMi from the late fires stowed on unused sections was unsightly, and that the Board should take the necessary stP]>« to bavo the unsanitary condition removed i;nd abated. The Board decided to notify owners to tike
slops to have Hie places put in a sani tary condition.
Private Douglas Des Forges arrived dome on Wednesday evening and was welcomed by the townsmen. The chairman of the Town Board officially welcomed him home, but was sorry for the necessity of his home-coming (badly wounded). The trip across from England improved his health considerably, (in Monday night a social evening wai tendered Private Des Forges by the -Church of England Sunday School. At the S.M. Thomas Hodge and Fredcrick Harvey, charged with being on licensed premises on Sunday, April 22, at liahotu, was dismissed as there was no sign of liquor having been consumed on Hie premises.
