STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.): [All communications, letters, etc., left w;th Mr. H. J. I'/opkin;, hookscUor, v ill receive prompt attention.} (From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, May 17. Some comment ha,:: been occasioned at the constitution ot' the several committees set up by the. Borough Council. It has been pointed out that Cr. Thompson, who has been six years on the Council, and two years deputy mayor and chairman of the works committee and also on the lighting committee, is now on neither. Cr. Lawson also appears tB have veceivcd the "cold shoulder."

The visit of the Farmers' Union delepates to Stratford to-day made one. think for a moment that we had another sale day. The central position of the town enabled delegates to travel without difficulty.

Private Sullivan, son of our Borough engineer, is now able to move around very comfortably. His quick recovery has been a source of pleasant surprise to his many friends. This is mainly attritutable to the skilful medical treatment and the patient nursing and attention given by the hospital staff. There lire other extpatients who speak highly of the thorough attention given them when inmates of the hospital.

Included in the casualty list announced yesterday are the names of Corporal L. J. Slater, Eltham, killed in action; Privates A. P. Ross, New Plymouth, N. L. .Sarton, Tikorangi, and W. H. Cameron'•- New Plymouth,, wounded. FARMERS IN CONFERENCE. Stratford, May 18. The delegates at the Farmers' Conference on Thursday had a big day, considering the remits tabled. There was practically .only one Rebate during the session, which was on the remit brought forward by Mr. G. H. Buckeridge, to alter the name of the union to the Producers' Association. He introduced somi_. very debatable matter into his speech, and although many obviously disagreed with some of the sentiments expressed, all had to admire the sincerity of the secretary in fight ; r.g for a cause which was apparently a forlorn one from the outset. Evidently the Farmers* Union has come to stay, although the secretary intimated that he would not cease in his endeavors to bring members round to 11 ''broader view of matters."

GENERAL. The executive committee of the A. and P. Association met last evening Present: Messrs E. Jackson (president), J. Shotter, W. J. Lopdell, and Ranford, Regret was expressed at the association losing the services of Mr. A. Spillman, who is leaving .Stratford, and a motion was carried expressing appreciation of his work on behalf of the association. McLachlan was elected a member. A conference of the 'delegates o; the New Plymouth, Hawera and Stratford Associations is to be held at Stratford, the date to be arranged by Mr. Jackson. It was resolved that the ne.v tea :'ooms on the show grounds be opened with a social and dance on a date to be arranged. An impression prevails in some quarters that there may be. no show this year. This seems hardly likely. A fewdays ago the Hawke's' Pay A. and P. Association held a meeting', and resolved to hold their show this year as usual. This was brought about by the fact that the following associations had forwarded resolutions to the eft'ect that the shows would be held uiis year: Canterbury, Auckland, Otago, Manawatu, Wairarapa, Tnranaki, Pannevirk'. \voodvilie, Timaru, Stratford, wainu and Pahiatua. Negative replier were received from Ohakune and Egmont Associations.

Mr. R. Masters, chairman of the Education Board, returned irom a visit t) the northern part of the board's district to-dav.
