(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, v. ill receive prompt attention.] Stratford, May 14. At the patriotic tea joom; :.:>j mart on Saturday the takings were: Tea rooms, £5 Cs; mart £lO 10s. Mrs J. W. Boon controilcd matters on Saturday. This week the mart will bs supervised by Mesdames Petrie and Smart, and the tea rooms by Mrs. W. JRobinson. Assistance is desired from others, whilst donations of fruit, produce, vegetables, etc., will be welcomed.

I understand that a charge will be laid by the police against a Waipuku youth for tampering with the railway. The first meeting of the new Borough Council will be held to-night. Some interest is being taken in the notices of motion by the Mayor (Mr. ,T. W. McMillan), rescinding the minimum charge, and also as to the proposed centre poles for lighting Broadway. "Pricking the card," it looks almost certain that the minimum charge will 'bo further reduced or blotted out, but theiv is no degree of certainty regarding the Broadway lights.

There seems to be a few theatrical companies in Taranaki just now. In conversation with one of the member? here I was informed that they cannot leave New Zealand. Later on, when they tire of audiences or the audiences of 'them the theatrical folk may develop into butter-makers or milkers. At present they are filling in time, and with the present weather prevailing the task is not an enviable one.

The new train system was introduced to-day, and it was pleasing to note the contract in conversation with travellers and carriers. Last week it was a case of "it might or may not," but from today goods can go forward with a degree of regularity that minimises worry and language.
