Washington's house at Newburg, from which Washington directed the battle against the British during the revolutionary war. A gold medal was awarded General Joffre In commemoration of his visit. ShrieKing whistles and fluttering flags bespoke the popular ..u'.hxisiasm which greeted Mr. Balfour. lr .ule Britannia" was played! at the city hall and parks. Troops lined the streets. Boy Scouts were a prominent feature. Answering the speeches ' Mr. Choate and * vor Mitchell, Mr. Balfour at the city hall declared that Amwica had entered the war without taint- of selfishness, sharing the burdens as he hoped it would share the triumphs. Mr. Balfour assured the gathering that the welcome exceeded anything he had ever experienced in his life.
